The guitar is a 1965 Gibson Folksinger BTW. It's missing the lower pick guard. It originally came with two, an upper and a lower probably because (say it with a crotchety old man voice) "these kids today are using these things called plectrums and scratching up the top of the guitar. So let's glue two big pieces of plastic on the top to protect it."
Great video with lots of important ideas. Keeping the guitar out of the case is a big one. I did that when I started, and it really helped. It also helped my son get into guitar because they were always out so he wanted to play too. The more modern step that I'm just now trying to add in is to play with backing tracks instead of of metronome. Us beginners don't have great timing and it's really important to learn. Metronomes are very boring. Today, with all this technology around us, there really should be no reason to use one. I want to spice it up with backing tracks. My son turned me onto irealpro and I'm just trying that out. Any other ideas?
Hi, I am 63 now. Just learned 5 weeks in college 25 years ago (summer class). It was a very bad experience since the professor never wanted to teach. The only thing he did to do was forced all students bought the book he copied from somewhere (10 songs only with $10). If we refuse it, we could not take his class. Anyways, we learned Do, Re, Mi ,Fa, So, La, Ti, that's it. Nothing else. After that I gave my guitar away. I am thinking to learn guitar again, hope this time I can learn something. Can any one tell me what kind of guitar I should buy for a BIGINNER (Never learn guitar when I was young or grew up in a family of musicians like the others) ? Thanks!
I have been playing guitar for way too long to be at the level I am, but the best piece of advice I got was in this video. ALWAYS have your guitar within reach. I had my guitar in the case for years and pulled it out only when I was in the mood. Now I have three spread around the house so I can pick it up whenever I see it.
I would add that you should have a sense of humor. I’ve cracked myself up with some of the mistakes I’ve made and how bad it sounded! 52 and starting to play electric. Power chords, AC/DC songs, Green Day, Led Zeppelin riffs, etc) With a good amp (I don’t mean expensive but one that offers different effects) your guitar world will change. The 5 min/day is a great idea!!
I was thinking of purchasing a Washburn acoustic electric guitar to learn on, what guitar would you recommend, I really would like your thoughts or suggestions please.
Agree 100% with the stand. Started learning the banjo at fifty and 2years later I'm starting guitar. Keep both on stands in the living room and can't keep my hands off them. Thanks for the other tips 👍🏻🪕🎸
I know it's been 3 years since you posted these but unfortunately many of the links for your finger exercises no long work. As an older re-learner I really appreciate the tips!

Wow, looks like I’m a youngster around here at 62. Hehe.
Rock On everyone !

My BIG QUESTION is…….. How to "SING & PLAY the guitar at the SAME TIME! Aaaaaaahhhhhhh!!!!! (LOL)
Especially when you learn something new it's actually good to not practice for too long. Your brain will have an easier time to memorize that stuff.
This man is so good well explained lessons love it larrysullivan in London
Lol I have a drum kit in my music room..
Learn, Asus2 and Em open chords, the easiest two chords there are….and it sounds amazing.

I am 75 years old and I have the exact problem you described. The F chord is giving me fits. Thank you for your suggestion.
I’m 16 I think I’m a little to old to learn
I’ve been at the same stage for 10 years. Still cant improve.
