Justin, if you're reading this, I would recommend starting off students with small fingers on E chord. When I began with D, it was too hard to stretch my fingers while pressing down and holding my hand still. This chord is so much easier to hold.

One trick I found for playing is to have really short nails. I was just playing for 5 minutes and it wasn't getting a clear sound, so I filed my nail on my 1st finger a little bit and it instantly made it easier to hit the chord.
